Project Description
Meridian Office Tower, Barcelona
Details
Site: Barcelona
Use: Offices
Description
The building is situated in the lower part of a block where there is a large commercial center. One of the challenges of the project deals with how the building can be made visible from the main avenue of the area, La Meridiana.
Project
Despite the large volume of the commercial center, it was decided to move the building sideways to the north so that it appears behind the El Corte Inglés department store. This sideways movement occurs in all the stories except the first three, which results in a large covered square hall that defines the entrance to the building and the end of a side passage that climbs from La Meridiana and goes round the north façade of the commercial center.
The building is made up of a large prismatic volume in the form of a screen orientated north-south of 63.6 x 22 x 70 meters in height. The sixteen stories and the projection of 15 meters on the north façade characterize the building. On the east and west façades, for reasons of sustainability, the proposal is to place some brise soleils of two stories in height. These devices have a specially designed section that enables a 45% saving in the heating and air-conditioning. At the south end of the site and as an independent building a compact volume appears, with a ground floor and three stories more, that contains a building dedicated to public facilities.
